Explore one of Africa’s most dramatic and extreme landscapes on this unforgettable adventure to the Danakil Depression, located within the Afar Triangle a geological wonder formed by the meeting of three tectonic plates. Part of the Great Rift Valley system, this region showcases raw natural power, surreal beauty and ancient human traditions. Travel through vast desert plains, salt flats and volcanic terrain to discover the colorful mineral formations of Dallol one of the lowest places on Earth at 120 meters below sea level witness the glowing lava lake of the Erta Ale active volcano, and experience traditional salt mining still practiced by the Afar and Tigray people. From bubbling hot springs and salt mountains to wildlife encounters and historic rock-hewn churches, this journey offers a rare blend of geology, culture and true adventure.
Day 1: Addis Ababa – Awash National Park
After breakfast, meet your tour staff and begin the drive southeast through the Great Rift Valley. Enjoy scenic landscapes en route with a lunch stop. Upon arrival at Awash National Park, enjoy an afternoon game drive across savannah grasslands, spotting wildlife and visiting the impressive Awash River Falls.

Day 2: Awash National Park – Semera (Afar Region)
Morning drive toward Semera, the capital of the Afar Region. Along the way, admire Rift Valley scenery and gain insight into Afar pastoral life. Upon arrival, complete travel permits at the tourism office.
Overnight: Hotel or camping
Day 3: Semera – Afdera Salt Lake & Hot Springs
After breakfast, finalize permits and collect local escorts before driving to Afdera. Visit the salt lake, observe traditional salt mining activities, and relax in the natural hot springs.

Day 4: Afdera – Dodom – Trek to Erta Ale Volcano
Drive to the Afar tourism office and police station to complete final formalities and collect armed escorts. Continue to Dodom (Kurwased) base camp, where camels are arranged to carry supplies. After an early dinner, begin the 15 km trek to Erta Ale Volcano (613 m above sea level). Witness the spectacular lava lake glowing against the night sky.
Overnight: Camping near the crater rim
Day 5: Erta Ale – Dodom – Hamedella
Early morning trek back to base camp, followed by breakfast. Drive to Hamedella, stopping for a picnic lunch. In the late afternoon, photograph salt caravans crossing the desert.

Day 6: Dallol – Lake Asale Excursion
Early departure to explore the surreal landscapes of Dallol, featuring colorful mineral deposits, bubbling sulfur springs, and salt formations. Visit Lake Asale and observe traditional salt extraction by Afar and Tigray workers. Return to camp for rest.

Day 7: Hamedella – Mekelle via Berhale
Drive through Berhale and desert settlements before continuing to Mekelle. Enjoy your first cold drink after days in the desert and relax upon arrival.

Day 8: Full Day Exploring the Rock-Hewn Churches of Tigray
Explore the spectacular Geralta rock-hewn churches, including Abune Yemata Guh, Mariam Korkor, and Yohannes Mekudi. These ancient cliff-top churches offer breathtaking views and spiritual insight.
Overnight: Hotel in Mekelle
Day 9: Mekelle – Kombolcha via Hayk Lake
Drive south through dramatic highland scenery to Hayk Lake. Visit Hayk Estifanos Monastery, famous for its ancient manuscripts and religious treasures (open to men only). Continue to Kombolcha.

Day 10: Kombolcha – Addis Ababa – Departure
Morning drive back to Addis Ababa through the Rift Valley escarpment, stopping at scenic viewpoints. In the evening, enjoy a traditional Ethiopian farewell dinner with live cultural music, followed by transfer to the airport for departure.
