Embark on an unforgettable journey through Ethiopia’s historic and cultural treasures. From the ancient civilization of Axum, the spectacular Simien Mountains, and the rock-hewn churches of Tigray and Lalibela, to the walled city of Harar and the natural marvels of Lake Tana and Blue Nile Falls, this 15-day tour showcases the rich heritage, diverse landscapes, and unique customs of Ethiopia.
Day 1: Addis Ababa – Bahir Dar (Drive)
Drive north through the Entoto Hills, visiting the 13th-century Debre Libanos Monastery and 16th-century Portuguese Bridge, passing the Blue Nile Gorge. Lunch at Debre Markos before continuing through scenic farmland. Arrive in Bahir Dar in the late afternoon.

Day 2: Bahir Dar – Lake Tana Monasteries & Blue Nile Falls
Morning boat trip on Lake Tana to visit the medieval monasteries of Ura Kidane Mehret and Azwa Maryam, famous for colorful frescoes and illuminated manuscripts. Afternoon excursion to the Blue Nile Falls, locally known as Tiss Isat (“Water that Smokes”).

Day 3: Bahir Dar – Gondar
Drive 180 km to Gondar, the “Camelot of Africa.” Explore the Royal Enclosure, including Fasiladas’ Castle, Debre Berhan Selassie Church, the Bath of Fasiladas, and the ruins of Queen Mentewab’s palace. Optional visit to Awra Amba community, a model of egalitarian living.

Day 4: Gondar – Simien Mountains National Park (Trekking)
Morning drive to Debark, gateway to Simien Mountains National Park (UNESCO). Trek around Sankaber camp, spotting endemic wildlife such as Gelada baboons and Walia ibex, with panoramic mountain views.
Overnight in lodge/camping.
Day 5: Simien Mountains – Axum (Drive)
Drive through the stunning Semien escarpments and the Tekeze River Gorge, one of Ethiopia’s most scenic roads, arriving in Axum in the evening.

Day 6: Axum – Birthplace of Ethiopian Civilization
Full-day exploration of Axum, visiting Stelae Park, St. Mary of Zion Cathedral, King Kaleb’s tomb, Queen of Sheba’s palace ruins, and the Trilingual Inscription of King Ezana.
Overnight in Axum.
Day 7: Axum – Yeha & Debre Damo – Hawzen
Drive to Yeha, Ethiopia’s oldest standing temple (5th century BC), then visit Debre Damo Monastery (men-only, accessed by rope climb). Option to explore Tigray rock churches (Teka Tesfa Cluster). Arrive in Hawzen in the evening. Overnight in Hawzen Lodge.
Day 8: Hawzen – Tigray Rock Churches – Mekelle
Explore Geralta rock churches: morning at Mariam Korkor, afternoon at Abune Yemata Guh (challenging climb but rewarding views). Continue to Mekelle, visiting Abrehawe Atsbha and Wekro Cherkos along the way.

Day 9: Mekelle – Lalibela (Drive)
Full-day scenic drive through the Ethiopian highlands via Weldia, enjoying mountainous landscapes and local villages. Picnic lunch en route. Arrive in Lalibela late afternoon.

Day 10: Lalibela – Rock-Hewn Churches
Full-day visit of Lalibela’s 11 rock-hewn churches, often called the “8th Wonder of the World.” Morning visit Northwestern Cluster (Bet Medhane Alem, Bet Maryam, Bet Meskel, Bet Danaghel, Bet Mikael, Bet Golgotha). Afternoon visit Southeastern Cluster and Bet Giyorgis (St. George’s Church). Enjoy a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony in the evening. Overnight in Lalibela.
Day 11: Lalibela – Kombolcha (Drive)
Drive to Kombolcha, visiting the Nakutolab cave monastery and Hike Stephanos Monastery (men-only, scenic lakeside location). Overnight in Kombolcha.
Day 12: Kombolcha – Awash National Park (Drive & Game Drive)
Morning drive to Awash National Park, passing North Shewa and the northern rift escarpment. Optional stop at Bati Market (Monday) to meet Afar, Amhara, Argoba, and Oromo tribes. Afternoon game drive in the park.
Overnight in Awash lodge/camping.
Day 13: Awash – Harar (Drive via Aweday Market)
Morning game drive in Awash, then drive eastward through scenic highlands to Harar, stopping at Aweday Chat Market. Late afternoon arrival in Harar. Overnight in Harar.
Day 14: Harar – UNESCO Walled City
Full-day tour of Harar Jugol, exploring the 16th-century walled city, colorful markets, historic mosques, and shrines. Early evening Hyena Man performance, a unique local tradition feeding hyenas by hand.

Day 15: Harar – Addis Ababa (Departure)
Drive back to Addis Ababa, passing through Afar and Kereyu tribal areas. Evening farewell dinner with traditional Ethiopian cuisine and live cultural dance, followed by transfer to the airport for departure.
