Overview
Discover one of Africa’s most extraordinary and extreme landscapes on this unforgettable adventure to the Danakil Depression, located within the Afar Triangle a unique geological region formed by the meeting of three tectonic plates. Part of the vast Great Rift Valley, this dramatic “tear” in the Earth’s surface stretches from the Middle East to Mozambique and is even visible from space.
Ethiopia’s Afar Depression is one of only two places on Earth alongside Iceland where a mid ocean ridge can be observed on land. This raw and powerful landscape offers surreal beauty: colorful geothermal formations, salt mountains, bubbling sulfur springs and vast salt lakes shaped by volcanic activity.
During this journey, experience Dallol, one of the lowest places on Earth at 120 meters below sea level, marvel at its vivid mineral colors, visit Lake Asale, and witness traditional salt extraction practiced for centuries by the Afar and Tigray people. Travel to Lake Afdera and trek to the rim of Erta Ale, one of the world’s few continuously active lava lake volcanoes. This expedition blends geology, culture and adventure in one of the planet’s most otherworldly regions.
