5 Days Historic tour route

5 days

Overview

Ethiopia’s Historic Route is one of the world’s greatest cultural treasures. Nowhere else can such a concentration of ancient civilizations, living traditions, and UNESCO World Heritage Sites be found in a single region. From the prehistoric roots of Axum, the medieval castles of Gondar, and the island monasteries of Lake Tana, to the awe-inspiring rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, this journey traces over 3,000 years of Ethiopian history. Set amid dramatic landscapes and vibrant cultures, the Historic Route reveals the soul of Ethiopia—where past and present continue to live side by side.

Day 1: Fly Addis Ababa – Bahir Dar | Lake Tana & Blue Nile Falls

Early morning flight to Bahir Dar. After breakfast, enjoy a boat cruise on Lake Tana, visiting the beautifully painted monasteries of Ura Kidane Mihret and Azwa Mariam. View the source of the Blue Nile, then drive to Tis Issat (Blue Nile Falls) for a scenic walk and exploration.
Overnight hotel.

Day 2: Drive Bahir Dar – Gondar | Explore the Camelot of Africa

Morning drive to Gondar (180 km). Afternoon city tour of the Royal Enclosure (Fasil Ghebbi), including Emperor Fasiladas’ Castle, Debre Berhan Selassie Church, Fasiladas Bath, and Qusquam Palace of Empress Mentewab. Overnight hotel.

Day 3: Fly Gondar – Axum | Ancient Holy City

Morning flight to Axum, the cradle of Ethiopian civilization and Christianity. Visit the Stelae Park, St. Mary of Zion Cathedral, archaeological museum, King Kaleb’s tombs, Ezana inscriptions, and the ruins of the Queen of Sheba’s palace. Overnight hotel.

Day 4: Fly Axum – Lalibela | Rock-Hewn Churches

Morning flight to Lalibela, the spiritual heart of Ethiopia. Explore the first cluster of the legendary rock-hewn churches, carved from solid volcanic rock in the 12th–13th centuries. Walk through ancient tunnels and conclude with the iconic Church of St. George. Overnight hotel.

Day 5: Fly Lalibela – Addis Ababa | Departure

Morning visit to the second group of Lalibela churches. Fly back to Addis Ababa for shopping and relaxation. In the evening, enjoy a farewell cultural dinner with traditional Ethiopian cuisine and live ethnic music before transfer to the airport for departure.
