Held annually on September 26–27, Meskel commemorates the discovery of the True Cross and brings together hundreds of thousands of worshippers in deeply moving public ceremonies filled with faith, color, chanting, and the dramatic lighting of sacred bonfires.This immersive cultural journey blends the spiritual power of the Meskel Festival with Ethiopia’s most iconic natural and historical landmarks. Travel from vibrant Addis Ababa to the legendary medieval city of Gondar, often called Africa’s “Camelot.”
Along the way, explore the breathtaking landscapes of the Simien Mountains, witness the thundering beauty of the Blue Nile Falls, discover the majestic Castles of Gondar, marvel at the sacred rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, and visit the ancient island monasteries of Lake Tana. Every day reveals a new layer of Ethiopia’s rich heritage, spirituality, and natural beauty.Recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, the Meskel Festival is a profound cultural experience unlike any other. This journey offers a rare opportunity to share in Ethiopia’s living traditions while exploring one of Africa’s most fascinating destinations. The tour lasts nine days and eight nights, with both departure and return in Addis Ababa. September is the ideal time to travel, as it coincides with the Meskel celebrations. A valid visa is required for all travelers and can be obtained online through Ethiopia’s official e-Visa system.

Day 1: September 20 – Addis Ababa to Lalibela

On Day 1 (September 20), you will take a morning flight from Addis Ababa to Lalibela, Ethiopia’s most sacred historic town, often referred to as the “New Jerusalem” and the “Eighth Wonder of the World.” In the afternoon, you will explore the north-western group of Lalibela’s remarkable rock-hewn churches, including Bete Medhane Alem, Bete Maryam, Bete Meskel, Bete Danaghel, Bete Mikael, and Bete Golgotha. After the visit, you will transfer to your hotel for the night.

Day 2: September 21 – Lalibela

After morning breakfast, set off by car to the cave church of Yemrhane Kristos, built by the king of the same name before the reign of King Lalibela. This fascinating church is constructed inside a cave and Aksumite Kingdom architectural techniques are visible. It is similar to the 7th-century monastery at Debre Damo in Tigray, with alternating levels of wood and stone. Back to the town of Lalibela for lunch. In the afternoon proceed to visit the second group of the rock-hewn churches of King Lalibela. You will visit Bete Amanuel, Bete Merkorios, Bete Abba Libanos, and Bete Gabriel-Rafael (possibly a former royal palace). Finally discover Bete Giyorgis, often regarded as Lalibela’s most beautiful church.

Day 3: September 22 – Lalibela to Bahir Dar

On Day 3 (September 22), you will embark on a scenic full-day drive through Ethiopia’s highlands to Bahir Dar, located on the southern shores of Lake Tana. En route, you will visit the Awramba Community Village, a unique self-sustaining community known for its strong social values and commitment to equality. Arrival in Bahir Dar is in the late afternoon, followed by transfer to your hotel.

Day 4: September 23 – Bahir Dar

On Day 4 (September 23), the morning features a boat cruise on Lake Tana, Ethiopia’s largest lake and the source of the Blue Nile. During the cruise, you will visit the monasteries of Ura Kidane Mihret and Azwa Maryam, famous for their colorful murals and ancient religious manuscripts. You may also encounter hippos and a variety of birdlife along the way. In the afternoon, you will travel to the magnificent Blue Nile Falls, locally known as Tis Isat or “Smoking Water,” where the river plunges dramatically into a gorge. You will return to Bahir Dar for the night.

Day 5: September 24 – Bahir Dar to Gondar

On Day 5 (September 24), you will drive north to Gondar, passing through scenic farmlands and mountain landscapes. In the afternoon, a guided city tour introduces you to the highlights of Gondar, including the Royal Enclosure (Fasil Ghebbi), the historic Bath of Emperor Fasilidas, and the beautiful Debre Berhan Selassie Church, renowned for its ceiling adorned with angelic murals. Overnight is in Gondar.

Day 6: September 25 – Excursion to Simen Mountains

On Day 6 (September 25), you will take a day excursion to Simien Mountains National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its dramatic escarpments and Afro-alpine landscapes. Enjoy gentle walks to breathtaking viewpoints and encounter endemic wildlife such as the famous Gelada Baboons. In the afternoon, you will return to Gondar.

Day 7: September 26 – Gondar to Addis Ababa (Eve of Meskel Festival)

On Day 7 (September 26), you will fly back to Addis Ababa in the morning. In the afternoon and evening, you will attend the Meskel Eve (Demera) ceremony at Meskel Square, the heart of the celebrations. The event features colorful clergy processions, traditional chanting and dances, and the lighting of a massive bonfire symbolizing the discovery of the True Cross. Overnight is in Addis Ababa.

Day 8: September 27 – Departure

On Day 8 (September 27), enjoy a full-day city tour of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s vibrant capital. Visits include the National Museum, home to the famous hominid fossil “Lucy,” the panoramic viewpoints of Entoto Mountains, the historic Holy Trinity Cathedral, and the bustling Merkato, Africa’s largest open-air market. In the evening, a farewell dinner at a traditional Ethiopian cultural restaurant marks the end of your journey. You will then be transferred to Bole International Airport for your departure flight.
