Overview
This 13-day journey explores Ethiopia’s most important historical and cultural landmarks, from the ancient civilizations of Axum and the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela to the royal castles of Gondar. The tour concludes in the walled city of Harar Jugol (UNESCO World Heritage Site), renowned for its vibrant markets, Islamic heritage and centuries-old traditions. Day 1: Addis Ababa | City Sightseeing
Arrival at Bole International Airport and warm welcome by your guide. Transfer to hotel and check-in. Later, enjoy a city tour of Addis Ababa, exploring key cultural and historical highlights. Overnight hotel.
Day 2: Addis Ababa – Bahir Dar | Blue Nile Gorge
Drive to Bahir Dar (approx. 570 km). En route, visit the historic Portuguese Bridge and enjoy spectacular views of the Blue Nile Gorge. Overnight in Bahir Dar on the shores of Lake Tana.
Day 3: Lake Tana Monasteries & Blue Nile Falls
Morning boat excursion on Lake Tana visiting ancient island monasteries. In the afternoon, drive to Tis Abay and walk to the scenic Blue Nile Falls. Overnight in Bahir Dar.
Day 4: Bahir Dar – Gondar | Royal Enclosure
Drive to Gondar (180 km). Afternoon visit to the Royal Enclosure (Fasil Ghebbi), including Emperor Fasiladas’ Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Overnight in Gondar.
Day 5: Gondar – Simien Mountains National Park
Drive to Simien Mountains National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to Ras Dashen, Ethiopia’s highest peak. Enjoy light trekking and panoramic views, with chances to spot Walia Ibex and Gelada Baboon.

Day 6: Simien Mountains – Axum | Scenic Highlands
After a short morning trek, drive to Axum, passing through spectacular highland landscapes along the Simien Massif. Overnight in Axum.
Day 7: Axum | Ancient Civilization
Full-day exploration of Axum, once the capital of an ancient empire. Visit the Stelae Park, St. Mary of Zion Church, royal tombs, and archaeological sites reflecting Ethiopia’s early civilization.

Day 8: Axum – Mekelle | Tigray Rock Churches
Drive through Tigray visiting selected rock-hewn churches, including sites in the Gheralta cluster such as Abune Yemata Guh (optional). Continue to Mekelle.

Day 9: Mekelle – Lalibela | Highland Landscapes
Drive to Lalibela, crossing dramatic Ethiopian highlands and scenic valleys.

Day 10: Lalibela | Rock-Hewn Churches
Full-day visit to the legendary 11 rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, carved from solid volcanic rock in the 12th–13th centuries.

Day 11: Lalibela – Addis Ababa – Harar | Hyena Feeding
Fly from Lalibela to Addis Ababa, then continue by flight to Dire Dawa and drive to Harar. In the evening, witness the unique hyena-feeding tradition outside the city walls.

Day 12: Harar | Walled City Exploration
Full day exploring Harar Jugol (UNESCO World Heritage Site). Discover colorful markets, historic mosques and shrines, traditional Harari houses, and vibrant local culture.

Day 13: Harar – Addis Ababa | Departure
Morning visit to the Arthur Rimbaud Cultural Center and final sightseeing. Transfer to Dire Dawa Airport for your flight to Addis Ababa. In the evening, enjoy a farewell cultural dinner with traditional Ethiopian cuisine and live folkloric dance.
