Overview
Embark on a 13-day photography expedition through Ethiopia’s culturally rich and visually stunning Omo Valley. This immersive journey begins in Jimma and takes you deep into the remote lands of the Surma (Suri), Mursi, Hamer, Karo, Arbore, and Dassanech tribes, offering exceptional opportunities for cultural interaction and photography. Capture traditional lifestyles, intricate body adornments, dramatic landscapes, and vibrant markets in one of Africa’s most fascinating and untouched regions.
Day 1 – Arrival in Addis Ababa
Arrive at Bole International Airport and meet your tour leader. Transfer to your hotel and prepare for the journey ahead. Enjoy an orientation and welcome dinner featuring traditional Ethiopian cuisine and cultural performances.
Day 2 – Flight to Jimma
If time permits, explore Addis Ababa’s landmarks including the Natural History Museum (home of Lucy) and Merkato. Take a domestic flight to Jimma, the former capital of Kaffa Province, the birthplace of Coffea arabica. Overnight in Jimma.
Day 3 – Drive Jimma to Mizan Teferi
Travel into southwestern Ethiopia, passing the Bebeka Coffee Plantation and scenic highlands. Continue toward Kibish, the gateway to Surma territory. Capture stunning landscapes along the route. Overnight camping near Kibish.
Day 4 – Kibish (Suri Tribe)
Spend the day with the Suri people, observing their pastoral lifestyle, vibrant body painting, and decorative scarification. Photograph women’s iconic lip plates and men preparing for daily activities.
Day 5 – Kibish (Suri Tribe)
A full day for cultural immersion and photography. With luck, witness the Donga stick-fighting ceremony, a traditional competition among unmarried men that plays a vital role in Suri social life.
Day 6 – Drive Kibish to Jimma
After breakfast, travel back to Jimma, capturing landscapes and local village life along the route. Overnight in Jimma.
Day 7 – Drive Jimma to Arba Minch
Journey toward Arba Minch, the gateway to the eastern Omo Valley. Stop along the way for photography opportunities and to stretch your legs. Overnight in Arba Minch.
Day 8 – Drive Arba Minch to Turmi (Arbore and Hamer Tribe)
Travel to Turmi, home to the Hamer tribe. Observe their unique rituals, including the bull-leaping ceremony for young men and ceremonial whipping of women. Photograph distinctive hairstyles, beadwork, and traditional attire.
Day 9 – Turmi (Hamer and Karo Tribe)
Explore the Karo tribe along the Omo River, known for elaborate body and facial painting, scarification, and clay-adorned hairstyles. Continue photographing Hamer villages in the afternoon.
Day 10 – Turmi to Jinka
Further exploration of Hamer culture before driving to Jinka for overnight stay.
Day 11 – Mago National Park (Mursi Tribe)
Visit the Mursi people, renowned for clay lip plates. Capture daily life, ceremonial adornments, and cattle-centered traditions. Explore the park’s landscapes for photography.
Day 12 – Jinka to Arba Minch via Konso
Drive northeast through Konso, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for terraced agriculture and walled villages. Learn about the Konso people’s rich traditions while capturing remarkable photography. Continue to Arba Minch for overnight stay.
Day 13 – Flight to Addis Ababa and Departure
Return to Addis Ababa by flight. End of tour.
