Upon arrival in Addis Ababa, you are welcomed at the airport and transferred to your hotel. Depending on your arrival time, you enjoy a guided city tour including the National Museum and a panoramic viewpoint over the capital. In the evening, experience a traditional Ethiopian dinner accompanied by music and cultural dance performances.
You take a morning flight to Jimma and continue driving toward Mizan Teferi. The route passes through lush highlands and Ethiopia’s famous coffee-growing regions. This scenic journey introduces you to the fertile landscapes and rural lifestyle of southwestern Ethiopia. Overnight stay in Mizan Teferi.
Travel by 4WD vehicle toward Kibish, entering the remote land of the Surma people. The road becomes more adventurous as you cross rivers and open plains. Upon arrival, you begin your first cultural interaction with the Surma community, known for expressive body painting, decorative scarification, and elaborate lip plates worn by women.
This day is dedicated to exploring Surma villages and experiencing their daily life. You observe cattle herding traditions, village activities, and seasonal ceremonies. If available, you may witness the traditional Donga stick-fighting ceremony, a ceremonial competition among Surma men. The day offers outstanding photography opportunities and meaningful cultural engagement.
Depart Surma land and drive toward Jinka, the gateway to the Omo Valley. The journey passes through diverse landscapes and tribal territories. Upon arrival in Jinka, you check in and relax at your lodge.
Today you visit Mago National Park to meet the Mursi people, famous for their iconic clay lip plates and strong cattle-based culture. After spending time in a Mursi village, you return to Jinka and visit the South Omo Research Center Museum for deeper insight into the ethnic diversity of the region.
Drive to Turmi, stopping along the way to visit an Ari village. Depending on the market day, you explore one of the vibrant weekly tribal markets in Keyafer or Dimeka, where various ethnic groups gather to trade goods and socialize. These markets provide colorful and dynamic cultural experiences. Overnight stay in Turmi.
Spend the day exploring the cultures of the Hamer and Karo tribes. In Turmi, you interact with the Hamer people, known for elaborate hairstyles, beadwork, and the dramatic bull-jumping initiation ceremony when available. Later, drive to Korcho village near the Omo River to meet the Karo tribe, renowned for intricate body painting and artistic scarification.
Travel to Omorate to visit the Dassanech people near the Omo River and close to Lake Turkana. You cross the river by traditional canoe and explore their villages, learning about their semi-nomadic lifestyle and distinctive adornments. Return to Turmi for overnight.
Drive back to Jinka and take a flight to Addis Ababa. In the evening, enjoy a farewell dinner before your international departure, concluding an unforgettable cultural expedition through the Surma and Omo Valley regions of Ethiopia.
